As usual, I go to the Village on the first Sunday of the month. The sunlight peaking through the mountains lights up my seemingly endless path ahead me. With the glamorous scenery of the sunrise giving me the least of hope, I walk for 3 hours pulling a wagon that my sister used to have as a kid along the highway until exit 176. The unmelted snow soaks into my boots, leaving my icy feet feeling numb. I sigh, “another disadvantage of having a house high up in the mountains”. Buildings and small houses begin to appear instead of vast wastelands and forests, and here we are, at the Village. This is where I go every month for bags of grain to support my huge family. Even when I come early, a massive line-up is already formed in front of the numerous bags of grains piled up. I look around at the people wearing the same black hoodies, black pants, and black boots, only recognizable by their hair colours. With no rosiness on their sunken cheeks, most of them stare at the foods with lifeless eyes. With a few more days of starve, I’d be no far off from their conditions either. At least twenty guards in uniforms patrol us and hand the grains out, with extra cameras on the buildings fixed on our faces that shows us to the government and our mysterious Leader. The book “Eragon” reminds me of the book “Dragon Rider” by Cornelia Funke. In fact, they are very similar fantasy books. The human main characters in both books, Eragon and Ben, were both normal children/teenagers at the beginning, but miracles stroke their average lives in which they met a flying dragon. Both their dragons introduced them to a magical world with mythological creatures and vicious evil leaders. The main characters had all shown a great deal of bravery fighting for friends/families and what they believe in, traveling far away on their dragons’ backs. The 2 books all had a final battle at the end between the good and evil, in which both the dragons unbelievably breathed fired and won the fight. In my opinion, Eragon and Ben both being “Dragon Riders”, living in a supernatural world, and fighting evil monsters with courageous hearts seems to correspond to each other.
The book “I Am Number Four” reminds me of some news that I heard earlier during the summer. “I Am Number Four” described aliens from the planet Lorien who came to Earth years ago to escape the Mogadorians, who were on a mission to kill every single one left of the Loriens. The aliens and the planets written in this book made me wonder about the outer space and if aliens really existed, which leaded to the news. The news was about astronomers from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center discovering the true colour, blue, of exoplanet HD 189733b using the Hubble telescope. It was fairly impressive since this was the first time finding out about the true colour of a planet that is not located in our solar system. With 1000 degrees Celsius temperature and raining glass, this planet may not contain living things, but the Hubble telescope was now a step ahead on finding other planets that had the ability to sustain lives. I feel that “I Am Number Four” can fairly well connect to the news about this newfound planet colour and discovering new habitable life. I can make connections to Number Four’s feelings about moving around cities and states from the book “I Am Number Four”. In the book, the author described how the main character, Number Four, had to move about every 6 months to live in a new home, new city so the Mogadorians wouldn’t find them and end his life. Number Four was tired of moving around too much to new environments, and I have had very similar experiences. I personally moved from China to Vancouver, then from Vancouver to West Vancouver. It was challenging and frustrating to adapt to a brand new environment. Fitting in, meeting new people, and going to a new school were all kinds of worries of mine, and sometimes I just wanted to settle down and not having to adjust to a new place. In conclusion, I believe that the main character in this book had almost the identical feelings about moving as me. |
